Jeff Lowe - 2 years of training

"...I soon realized that I needed to find a Crossfit gym if I wanted to continue as I couldn’t do a lot of the exercises that the website called for at my gym. They wouldn’t provide it nor would they allow it. The first Crossfit gym I called never called me back, and when I went by there nobody was there. The second one I tried was SoCal Strength and Conditioning in Costa Mesa, Ca. run by John Welbourn and Max Mormont. I set up an appointment with Jason Davis for an assessment shortly after. When I walked in that day after I met Jason I saw this dude with crazy-ass hair doing really heavy one-arm dumbbell snatches and box jumps, every so often screaming something that wasn’t discernable from where I was…as the reggae music blared from the ipod player. I remember thinking, ”I like that (sh*t), that’s what I’m talking about right there”.  That’s the energy I missed training around. People screaming and throwing things around was commonplace at Samson’s. Chalk flying, smelling salts, bar bending, huge weights, the crazy stuff I saw back the day..."continued

"I am sixty-eight years old. I have had two knee replacement, and I suffer from arterial fibrillation. At first I was intimated but some realized CrossFit was for everybody. My early training was not easy as I had physical limitations. Today I am amazed at how much I am able to do. Since training I have lost a good number of pounds. i am now living a much healthier life style."

"After just 10 weeks of training I feel more energized and my body feels tighter. I have noticed increased flexibility and feel much better about my health. I enjoy the workouts even though they are hard. They vary every time and I never get bored.

Thomas E. - 2 year of training

"Over the last few years I have noticed I have put on a few pounds and my fitness has declined. I just attributed it to getting older and my body aging. It wasn't until I started training with CrossFit Balboa that I realized this was false. At the age of 36 I am in the best shape of my life and don't see any end in sight. I know this sounds like one of those bad "BoFlex" commericals but it is true. The training we do is far different then anything I have encountered since my football playing days and even now I wish I had this resource when I was playing high school and college football."

Carey W. - 1 year of training

"I started doing my training two months after delivering my second child and my second c-section. I gained 47 lbs with my pregnancy and I seriously needed some help! My idea of working out consisted of spending an hour on a cardio machine. When Max and John told some workouts would last less than 10 minutes I was confused. Then I discovered something called intensity and I learned that going hard for 10 minutes far out weighed 1 hour at a moderate pace. I am able to lift weights that I never imaged and I am shaving time off my workouts. In addition, my body has changed and I am better shape then before I had my first child. If you had told me a 37 year old mother could be in this shape I would have never believe you. The combination of being able to Olympic weightlift and do pull ups has added to my self-esteem more then anything I have done in recent years."

Rob A. - 14 months of training

"With my 40th birthday around the corner I needed to make a change. I was not feeling as strong as I was when i was in twenties and thirties and I realized I needed a change. I needed to find a style of training that both would allow to me feel strong and get me in good shape. I find myself wanting to do things athletically and I needed to have both the wind and be a better athlete to excel. Whether it is going snowboarding during the winter or body surfing during the summer I don't want to not be able to do the things that are both fun and challenging. The training at SoCal SC has given the tools to do anything. I find myself being explosive, powerful and having the skills to do the things I want to do. When I started I struggled with the coordination movements like jumping rope and agility work. That has all changed and I see the difference in my athleticism from training with the crew from SoCal SC. When I went to take my CrossFit Level 1, something I never thought I could do, I was skilled in all the movements and competed very well in the WODs. I am not sure where I would be if I had not taken my training seriously and committed to making myself better."
